Private Moon. Leonid Tishkov. Russian Art Week 29 May – 05 June 2015, Erarta Galleries London

To celebrate Russian Art Week at Erarta Galleries London world-renowned, Russian artist Leonid Tishkov brings his ‘Private Moon’ to London for the first time since 2013. Tishkov also participates as curator of Maxim Boxer’s third exhibition and auction in London on the gallery’s lower ground floor.

Leonid Tishkov’s poetic and metaphysical oeuvre is realised in a diverse and often unconventional range of media, including installations, sculpture, video, photography, works on paper and books. ‘Private Moon’ is a visual poem telling the story of a man who fell in love with the Moon and stayed with her for the rest of his life. Immersed in a dream, taking care of this heavenly creature, the man becomes a mythological being, crossing the borderline between the two worlds, living in the real world as if in a fairytale.

Tishkov returns to London from an exhibition of his work at the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Art in Russia. His last exhibition in London was as part of the ‘Republic of the Moon’ exhibition at the Bargehouse in November 2013. Tishkov was one of a group of artists declaring a Republic of the Moon here on Earth, to re-examine our relationship with our planet’s only natural satellite.

Tishkov’s ‘Private Moon’ series (2003-2010) consists of a series of photographs, each photograph a little poem in its own right. The Moon to be exhibited at Erarta Galleries London will be the original installation, having traveled with the artist across Russia, the US, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Austria, France and Switzerland.

Tishkov dreams of one day travelling with her to the Moon itself.
